Traveling in the US is easy with a multitude of efficient methods to get around the country. Since in this country fuel is cheap, commuting by road makes more sense than taking a train. If you are going further then flying is probably your best method and the internal services the States can provide are second to none. Of course you must not forget traveling by bus which is still popular and convenient but not everyone is aware of how to gauge if this is the best method or not.

Using the bus service in the United States.
It is difficult to tell whether this is justified or not, the bus service in the US has a rather tarnished image and many consider the services to be at the base level only. The truth is, if you want to travel around the States on a luxury bus then it is perfectly possible if you choose the right carrier. There is only one company in the US, Greyhound, which rules the industry operating bus transportation services across the country. Companies like Trailways and Coach USA are conglomeration of several smaller independent bus operators who share the same marketing functions as well as work under the same brand. In some areas thee are other regional companies who, on occasion, use greyhound in certain areas to share the service they provide.
A newer development in the bus industry is the “Chinatown bus” which is a term used to describe low priced bus companies that operate pared down service on selected routes and charge much less than traditional bus companies. Originally they were used more by the Chinese migrant community - hence the name - but in recent times this low-cost form of travel has begun to appeal to a larger audience. At the other end of the market are the companies that are trying to compete directly with the airlines - providing a much more luxurious way to travel. These carriers offer first class amenities and luxury coaches who tend to be most successful for destinations that are fewer than 6 hours apart.
So how can you make up your mind when you need to travel by bus? To get an answer to this question, try answering the questions which appear below: What is your budget? If you are on a tight budget you won’t be able to beat the bus for price. It is, without doubt the least expensive way to travel across America and if you are traveling in the North East of the country, even more so as there are more companies who want your business.
Do you think once you reach your destination you will require a car? Remember in cities like New York, Boston and Washington DC, a car is not only useless but can prove to be a big hassle for driving around and finding a parking space.
How far is your destination? If it is less than 5 to 6 hours away a bus could take you there faster than an aircraft, if you take into consideration the time it takes for waiting at the airport. Additionally a bus would reach you right up to the downtown area which makes it so much easier to find your way about in the city.
Where are you going in the US? Remember that for remote places, the bus is the only feasible option you have and this is the only recognized mode of public transportation in the country. Some people prefer the more sedate form of travel afforded by a bus especially when they are in no hurry. If you are rushed then taking the bus may not be a good idea as the journey could include traffic jams and the bus in any case travels less fast than other methods of travel. If you are a visitor and intend to visit some of the more remote destinations, the bus is still the best way for you to do this. The recent rises in fuel costs have done nothing but help the bus companies and that is likely to continue as more an more people take to the bus as their preferred form of travel when going longer distances.
